"Le centre du
monde" belongs to the period in which Sarah Grilo’s practice, fully
consolidated after her New York years, unfolds with complete freedom
across a support the artist understood less as image than as linguistic
territory. Against a ground of luminous whites interrupted by fields of
yellow and green, layers of inscriptions drawn from heterogeneous
registers settle across the surface: the numerical sequence occupying
the centre with the forcefulness of a stamp, the word “DIFFERENCE”
coexisting without visible hierarchy.

The title appears
within the canvas itself, handwritten in the lower left corner — the
French of Le centre du monde evoking the artist’s Parisian years, as
from 1980 onwards she divided her time between Paris and Madrid. This
gesture of self-naming, of naming the work from within, condenses one of
the constants of her practice: the pictorial surface as a site of
enunciation, where language inhabits the work while asserting painting
as an act of presence.
