The Juan March Foundation and Frenesí Fine Arts present younger generations of artists at the Spanish Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca to mark the sixtieth anniversary of its founding.

With the aim of keeping alive the dialogue between the work of artists who, during the 1950s and 1960s, helped usher in contemporary art in Spain and that of artists working today, the Juan March Foundation and Frenesí Fine Arts present the project El polizón en el museo at the Spanish Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca.

A polizón is someone who secretly boards a journey without being noticed. In a similar way, the work of a contemporary artist quietly infiltrates the Spanish Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca for a period of time, taking its place among the collection as if it had always been there.

For the museum, founded exactly sixty years ago, in 1966, Fernando Zóbel assembled a collection of works by Spanish abstract artists whose average age at the time was around thirty, bringing together a largely young generation that would prove decisive in the history of art in Spain. In the same spirit, El polizón now selects equally young artists who draw inspiration from the works of artists represented in Cuenca or from the museum's history.

Periodically, the work of a polizón is introduced into the museum, becoming part of the collection in a discreet and natural way. Participating artists are free to choose an artist from the collection, select spaces in which to place their work, or draw inspiration from specific pieces in the collection with which to establish formal, conceptual or poetic relationships. In this way, each polizón brings the present into the museum, reactivates the presence of the past and keeps alive the experimental and open spirit that Fernando Zóbel instilled in it when he founded the museum sixty years ago.

The artist selected for the first edition of El polizón is Miguel Marina (Madrid, 1989).
