Mantel Nr.36 extends the sheet to the scale of the standing body, joining two sheets of paper vertically to reach a height of
just over two metres. Along the left edge, a band of red-orange gouache builds up through successive vertical strokes, each
one carrying the pressure and duration of the arm that traced it, while a narrow band of grey runs alongside as a second, quieter register. The rest of the surface is given over to the white of the paper, which acts as an active field of proportion.
The seam where the two sheets meet crosses the coloured bands and the white ground alike, keeping the construction of the
work legible within the image. The title, German for coat and, by extension, for any enveloping layer, places the drawing at the edge where a body meets the space around it, a relation Bächli has explored throughout her practice by measuring each
drawing against the reach of the arm and the height of the figure.
